Echinacea × Purpurea Sombrero™ Salsa Red - Coneflower
Echinacea × Purpurea Sombrero™ Salsa Red (Coneflower) There are many different Echinaceas available but the Echinacea × Purpurea Sombrero™ Salsa Red is one in the Sombrero series developed by Darwin Perennials. Salsa Red has very large, single flowers made up of bright red overlapping petals surrounding a large brown cone. Perfect for a sunny location, the flowers are very attractive to butterflies and also make good cut flowers. Coneflowers are long-blooming perennials if they are regularly deadheaded. Keeping some dried flower heads on the plant in fall will provide food over the winter for birds as well as add interest to the garden. Did you know that the botanical name Echinacea is derived from the Greek word echinos meaning hedgehog in reference to the flower’s prickly central cone!
