Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe sometimes called Mother of Thousands. The genus Kalanchoe includes more than 100 plants, and is a popular succulent that makes a great houseplant. Known to the Chinese as the plant of "thousands and millions of red and purple", their array of shades in red, yellow, pink and white mean there is a colour to suit anyone's taste. They also have interesting leaves with that glossy lush look that succulents are known for, so even when not in bloom it remains an attractive plant. Growing Kalanchoes are easy! They enjoy a nice sunny location especially in the summer growing season, and ideally a south facing window in the winter. Water sparingly to moderately throughout the summer and reduce watering in the winter. Let the soil surface dry out between watering, and in the winter, the plant can almost dry out; just watch the fleshy leaves for signs of water distress. They prefer warmth and should be grown above 13 degrees Celsius. Any regular potting mix will do, and feeding bi-weekly in the summer will keep it healthy. Kalanchoes are not particularly hard to grow, and are highly rewarding for their colorful and long-lasting flowers. Many people discard the plants after the bloom is over, but this isn't necessary. Simply cut off the flowering head, let the plant rest with reduced water, and resume its normal care. It will re-flower naturally in spring. So consider this easy, diverse, low-maintenance and well behaved succulent as a means to bring some bright cheer into your home during the darker gloomier days of winter.
