Plant of the Week for Mid July is my Night Blooming Orchid Cactus

Plant of the Week for Mid July is my Night Blooming Orchid Cactus. This Beauty is called Epiphyllum oxypetalum and is one of the most amazing sights! I often talk about the anticipation factor in gardening and this is the one worth waiting for. This plant is very fast growing as far as Orchid Cactus's are concerned. I bring it in the house for the winter and it just grows and grows. It hit the ceiling from the pot up in the one month! Most of my orchid cactus bloom in late winter to early summer in the day time but this one blooms at night. The night blooming Epiphyllums are typically pollinated by Bats or Moths. They better get lucky when they do bloom because the bloom only lasts the one night and that's it. I was luck to have 6 nine inch blooms this year on this plant 2 at the beginning of July the 2 each night for 2 consecutive nights in mid July. So there you go, I was so glad to have caught them in photos and I sure hope they bloom again next year!
