Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum'

Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' Variegated Solomon's seal is a fine choice for a shady bed. Gracefully arching 2 to 3-foot tall burgundy stems support narrow leaves streaked in pure white. From late spring to early summer, this species bears white flowers that mature into small berry like black fruit in autumn, when the foliage turns a golden yellow. Named 2013 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association, expect to see this plant showcased prominantly and be readily available. Although this plant likes water and shade, there are plenty of microclimates even within our own individual gardens where this lush plant would be beautiful and appropriate. These rhizomatous perennials are well suited to woodlands, naturalized areas, shady borders, and rock gardens. Grow this plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full to partial shade. Many of the native soils in the Okanagan are well drained, so with carefully placed and managed irrigation we can enjoy this plant here in our sunny, hot valley.
